What the Best Jobs for Retirees Have in Common

The subject of working retirement comes up quite often.  When you look at all the possibilities, what the best jobs for retirees have in common is that they are rewarding and are aligned with the interests of the person holding the job.  Although it’s hard to define “best” because that can be different for everyone, you can draw some conclusions.  If you choose to work, the job should give you some fulfillment.  It should be rewarding both emotionally and financially and mentally stimulating.  Does that sound impossible?  It really isn’t.  If you look for a job that is related to one of your interests or hobbies, you have greatly increased your chances of staying with it and being happy.

When you focus on the question of what the best jobs for retirees have in common, you find out that money is usually not the thing that stands out.  Many retirees are looking for a way to fill their day.  Some people have trouble going from working eight hours a day or more and then suddenly having nothing to do after their morning coffee.  That has not been my problem, but I know some people go out of their minds from boredom.  This is where having some outside interests can be very useful.

There is a difference between volunteering and actually having a job that provides some spending money.  I could see myself volunteering at a historical site very easily.  I would find it very enjoyable to be a part of a historic home and help people make the most of their visit.  I would not expect to be paid and, quite honestly, money would not be the reason that I would undertake a commitment like that.  I enjoy my free time and, other than following a travel itinerary, I dislike having to be in a specific place at a specific.

What the Best Jobs for Retirees Have in Common is That They Provide a Great Fit for Their Lifestyle

But I do understand that it might be appealing to seek employment at some point during your retirement and that leads us to another item on the list of what the best jobs for retirees have in common: convenience.  Many people take a job because it fits their schedule and is close by.  They don’t have to travel far and they can work the hours they choose without interfering with their social life.  They enjoy meeting people and the stimulation a job can bring.  If it’s in an area of interest that you have, that’s even better.  Why wouldn’t someone with a hobby work at a craft store?  And many golfers find employment at the local country club with the ability to play the course in off hours at a discounted rate or even free.  To me, this goes to the heart of what makes a job ideal for a person.  It’s a good fit for the person’s lifestyle.  It’s something that they enjoy doing anyway.  It creates a win-win situation for the employer and the employee.  In the end, it doesn’t seem like a job at all.

Making Jewelry

I’m very aware that the situation a person finds themselves in also makes a difference.  If you’re struggling for money, you’re almost forced to take whatever comes along.  I understand that and I sympathize with anyone in that situation.  What I would suggest is that you find something that you might have an interest in and don’t overlook the possibility of working within that area of interest or even find a way to make money from your hobby.  If you make crafts why not consider selling them?  Quilts, pottery, paintings and jewelry can easily be sold in stores or craft fairs and even online.  If you need money right away, a job might be necessary to get you through a rough spot but make it a goal to find a job that you’ll be happy with or start the process of creating a business from a hobby or interest that will not only fund your hobby but provide some extra money.  It’s quite possible to do and the best time to explore this option when you’re not desperate for cash.  Start exploring what’s out there.  You may not have ever frequented an antique or craft mall but they can be quite interesting.  The owner of the space sublets small areas where someone can display what they have.  It can be something they made or even things they have around the house collecting dust.  With some arrangements, you don’t even have to be there all the time.  Each item from your area is marked with your ID and the customer takes their purchase to a central cash register.  There will be a slight fee for this convenience but that’s to be expected.

Crafts Are A Great Hobby

When you look at what the best jobs for retirees have in common, you realize that with a little effort you can create your own “best” job.  It’s always best to plan and not make quick decisions so, if this is something you think you might want to do, start brainstorming about what might work best for you and don’t eliminate the possibility of starting a small business or website.  It can be a lot of fun.  Explore the possibilities because it’s time to Enjoy Retired Life!
