You’ve worked all your life to get to this point in your life. You’ve saved your money and, perhaps, bought a second home in a warmer climate. Let’s make sure you remember to have fun in retirement. That might sound crazy or a little obvious to you, but you have no idea how many people tell me that they’re bored. All they do is watch television all day. That’s not really getting the most out of your golden years. To my way of thinking this time of your life is for enjoying all the things you had to put off when you were working. Remember those vacations that you didn’t want to end? Go back to those places and relive those times. Do you know how much more enjoyable Disney World is when you can do it a relaxed pace and you don’t have to go back to work on Monday? Do you know how much more exciting it is to go on a road trip that doesn’t have to really end? It’s time to have fun in retirement!
You finally have the time to learn new things, start a new hobby or rekindle old friendships or find new interests. Did your golf game struggle because you couldn’t play often enough? Did you always wonder how much taking lessons would help? Now is the time to find out. Maybe it’s tennis or pickleball that you enjoyed or softball or playing pool. How about starting a chess tournament with some of your friends or playing a game against a computer? Go out and make it happen! One thing I can tell you is that time goes by very quickly and, if you don’t make a plan, you’ll find another year has gone by and you haven’t crossed anything off your list of retirement dreams. It’s time to have fun in retirement.
The possibilities are endless and the sense of fulfillment you can have when you learn a new language or how to play an instrument or visit that far off location you always dreamed about is one of the best feelings you’ll ever have. The best thing about it is that you’re the one who calls the shots. You can do whatever you want to at this point in your life. There’s no job to go to and no one telling you what to do. For some people that’s a wish come true and for others it’s an absolute nightmare because decision making is not one of their strengths. If you fall into that latter category, that’s okay. Just remember to go easy on yourself. But not too easy. It’s time to have fun in retirement before the days and weeks turn into months and years.
If you’re overwhelmed with the options, then by visiting this website you’ve come to the right place. I hope there are enough ideas contained throughout these pages to get you excited again. I hope you recall an old interest or hobby and start to research it again. What’s really fun is when you find someone else with that same interest and I can assure you they’re out there. There are countless clubs devoted to model railroading, comic books, baseball cards, vinyl records and any other hobby or sport you can think of. Many times, a secondary interest takes hold and when that happens almost anything is possible. We know someone who had an interest in gardening and joined a club by us. At a monthly meeting of the garden club, a beekeeper gave a lecture on the benefits of honey. Within a year she was full speed ahead on cultivating this new interest. The great part is that she went about it very carefully because, when you’re retired, you have the luxury of time. She worked with a beekeeper to see if it was something she wanted to do and loved every minute of it. She is definitely having fun in retirement.
The great thing about this is that every person is different, and every person will have different interests and a different perspective. One trip to a baseball card show will prove how different every collector is. One person may specialize in rookie cards while another might specialize in pitchers or home run hitters. One of the best collections we’ve seen is at the Elliott Museum in Stuart and their latest exhibit is on Derek Jeter. It’s a very impressive collection.
One part of the museum showed a miniature circus, and it must have taken many months to put together. But you know what? It was a labor of love and provided someone with countless hours of enjoyment. While the collection ended up in a museum, your collection or venture can be for your own private enjoyment. That’s the real fun anyway. Miniature soldiers are a big business and I’ve seen many impressive collections. I have always been fascinated with things in miniature and have always thought about building a small model of Lincoln’s home in Springfield just for my own pleasure. Maybe it’s time that I take my own advice! It’s time to have fun in retirement. It’s time to Enjoy Retired Life.
