Find Your Rabbit Hole in Retirement

Exploring a new interest or rediscovering an old one can be all consuming.  My daughter and I refer to it as going down a rabbit hole.  My advice to everyone is to find your rabbit hole in retirement because it can be incredibly enjoyable.  The hours fly by as you research your topic, and the internet is a tremendous resource in providing endless nooks and crannies to explore.  My daughter and I like to enjoy an afternoon cocktail whenever we can and our favorite topic of conversation is the progress we’re making on most recently discovered interest and what we’ve been able to learn.  We share a number of interests and have scheduled shared sessions of research if we discover something that we both might enjoy.  Just a couple of weeks ago we spent an afternoon watching two documentaries on Disney World.  We are both admirers of Mr. Disney and it is rather amazing to watch some very rare films about the construction of Disneyland, Disney World and Epcot.  While it is taken for granted today, success was never assured, and it is inspiring to watch how he overcame all the obstacles and was determined to build his dream.

As you’re probably aware, I’m a great lover of history and I’ve gotten “lost” a number of times with stories and documentaries and dozens of books to read. From the Alamo to Transylvania and the origins of Dracula, I have immersed myself in countless topics my whole life. I suggest that you find your rabbit hole in retirement.  It can make days and weeks go by very quickly and I find myself reading late into the night because I can’t get enough of a certain topic.  I believe everyone has an interest like that.  My daughter enjoys everything about The Wizard of Oz and watching every movie of Judy Garland and all the concerts they filmed.  It’s amazing what you can find with a thorough search and a lot of it is free.  My son loves old baseball, basketball and football games and loves the old newsclips of Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus.

Visiting the Alamo will make Davy Crockett come alive.

Find your Rabbit Hole in Retirement.
Maybe it's studying History or taking up a new Hobby.

We know many people who sit in front of the television all day long.  Well, this is a way to actually bring a little bit of excitement to their world.  Encourage them to find their own rabbit hole.  The old westerns of the 1950’s are out there as well as the police shows.  It will bring back memories and, hopefully, trigger other interests.  My daughter stumbled upon some Twilight Zone episodes and wants to spend some time to see how many episodes I can remember.  It will be a lot of fun.  I encourage you to find your rabbit hole in retirement.

A friend of ours who has had some health problems has also discovered the wonders of the internet.  His interests are in old cars and music of the fifties.  The film clips of American Bandstand have helped him pass many hours and it got him to look through his old record collection where he found a couple of albums he had of Les Paul, the great guitarist.  Guess who went out and bought a used guitar and began to take lessons?  He found some courses offered on the internet and is enjoying his new hobby more than he thought he would.  It is amazing what a difference it can make when you add something new to your life.  Let’s face it, everyone can fall into a rut, and it seems that retirement can make you a little more prone to that.  You’ve got to avoid this at all costs.  You’ve got to find your rabbit hole in retirement.

If at all possible, share your interests with other people because you never know what the reaction will be.  New friendships can be born.  In my conversations about our vacations, I mentioned that we have gone to quite a few historic sites and, when I mentioned Gettysburg, one of our friends had a “true confessions” moment.  It turns out he is a Civil War fanatic and has participated in some re-enactments.  It’s a pastime that he very much enjoys.  While there are no Civil War battlefields in upstate New York, he is planning to journey down to Virginia to fulfill this need.  There will be many others who are in this same rabbit hole along with him.  He’s met a few people who constructed full scale battlefields in their basement and that might be something he undertakes in the future.  He won’t be alone in that effort either.  Believe me, as obscure an interest you may think you have, I can guarantee you’ll meet others like you if you make an effort to go out and explore.  It can be a very enjoyable experience.  I urge you to find your rabbit hole in retirement and Enjoy Retired Life!
